Annotations for Crying Shame

Lyric: Fucked it up
Annotation:
This song is one of four in Muse’s full discography to contain swearing in it, alongside with Panic Station, Psycho and We Are Fucking Fucked.

Lyric: Too much
 And we demolish too much
Annotation:
Here, Bellamy may be saying that the couple teared apart all the chances they had to continue. By using demolished, the protagonist clearly saw their relation as a big and fancy castle, untouchable. What they had were big. And now it’s nothing.

Lyric: Now it’s a crying shame
 And it’s a crying shame
We don’t know who to blame
 It’ll never be the same
 And it’s a crying shame
Annotation:
Bellamy’s voice, alongside with the protagonist’s despair about the sad situation he’s come with this relationship is defined as a “crying shame”. Something so good that could’ve gone so good and happy is now demolished. Really a crying shame.

Lyric: Against all the odds
Annotation:
Being this hell of a couple probably made people envying for sure, so as everyone was wishing they were over, their connection kept them going — sad that time teared them apart.

Lyric: And we were kissing gods
Annotation:
This can go two ways: He’s referring to them as gods of the art of kissing, implying their connection was surreal. They were literally kissing gods, which I don’t hold a minimum clue to what it should mean.

Lyric: But we had a dream
And it was meant to be
Annotation:
Like any other couple with dreams, thinking they would spend the rest of their lives together.

Lyric: And now it’s time to desecrate
Annotation:
It just seems that he treats their relationship as something holy, to the point where he refers to its ending as “desecrating”.

Lyric: And time has made the spell abate
Annotation:
The official lyrics are “Time has made the spell abate”, which changes completely the meaning of the phrase. Bellamy recognizes that time was the main reason they’ve started to fall apart with each other. By “spell”, he means passions, that warm and intense feeling towards the beginning of every love.

Lyric: Too late
And yeah baby it’s too late
Annotation:
Here, Bellamy starts by saying that it’s too late for them to get back together or loving each other like they used to. He’s trying to make her understand for good that they are over.

Lyric: [Verse 1]
Annotation:
“Crying Shame” potentially talks about how time has ruined a couple’s relationship by showing them they weren’t the ones for each other. Even though the reasons for them to fall apart are not clear, it’s right that time joined them to destroy the relation, and didn’t do it alone completely.
